Thankyou Zenobia - I actually found a more detailed account of that event in the San Francisco Chronicle. Clara was a grandaughter of Martin Trewhella and Clarinda Thomas who married at Ludgvan in 1818. I am yet to piece together all of the information but I now know quite a bit about this family and strongly suspect that the Civil War Veteran was the son of Martin and Clarinda. More work to be done so any more 'bits and pieces' you find will be welcome. CT

Another problem solved after many, many years of wondering! The OPC has the following burial:- Penzance St Mary (Madron Chapelry) 25th April 1847 James TREWHELLA of Penzance age 11 - pauper from Queen Street Now I have seen the original Parish Register and can confirm that this entry is accurate. However I have, since the day I saw it, found no further record to indicate just who young James might have been - no baptism and no census record. I have struggled for years to work out which family he 'might' have belonged to but could never come to any conclusion as his probably date of birth conflicted with other known information for any possible family. But tonight I was searching for another record on the OPC site and found this one again. For some reason - I do not know what! - I looked at the available information again. And it turns out that I have had the answer right under my nose for quite a long time! This is, in fact, JOHN TREWHELLA who died at Penzance 23rd April 1847 of 'scofula' at the age of 11. John was baptised at Penzance 13th November 1836 son of Henry Trewhella and Elizabeth (nee Honeychurch). You will notice that the date of death is just two days before the date of burial so it is obviously the same fellow. And I have a copy of the Death Certificate for John Trewhella. In 1841 the family was living at Marine Place Penzance and in 1851 they were 'back of Quay St' with John's father occupied as a labourer.
