Time to reopen another old but very brief discussion to see if any answers might be forthcoming.
Thomas QUICK, widower, son of William married Elizabeth PHILLIPS, widow, daughter of Thomas MAY 21st July 1853 at Mylor
I have found the first marriage for Elizabeth and also her baptism.
But it is Thomas QUICK who is of interest. (of course!)
From Census records I found that he was born at Towednack about 1805 and from that I know that he was the son of William QUICK and Elizabeth HOLLOW.
And, perhaps unusual for Towednack, Thomas was a master mariner.
All that is known about his first marriage is that there was a daughter - Catherine Smith QUICK - born at St Ives in 1841. (ref. Census and FreeBMD)
I have so far been unable to find any trace of that first marriage or any hint of the name of the first wife and the only possible clue is the use of the name Smith as a middle name for Catherine.
The 1841 Census has so far yielded no trace of the family and with Catherine's birth registered in the March Qtr of that year I would have expected to find her with her mother at least.
Unless the mother died at or soon after childbirth.
Putting on the thinking cap I decided to contact Newlyn to see if she might be able to find some trace of a marriage for Thomas based on all information currently available to me.
No record of a marriage for a Thomas QUICK to anyone named SMITH could be found - but there was the following most interesting item:-
The nearest I can find is from the Glamorgan records.
Thomas Quick born St Ives married Elizabeth Hogg born Cardiff.
They married 14.1.1832 Cardiff St John, Glamorgan.
I have tried to look for Elizabeth Hoggs parents in case her Mums
maiden name was Smith but no luck.
At this stage I suspect that this may be yet another Thomas QUICK from St Ives - but more of that shortly.
First of all - here is what I wrote back to Newlyn:-
If nothing else it gives us another Quick from St Ives to help fill in a bit of one of the pictures! :-)
Just finished watching Rawhide and was thinking about a particular Census record from 1851 that I am not sure I have ever been able to make much sense of.
Thomas Mitchel, head, mar, 42, pilot, born Feock
Jane do., wife, mar, 35, born Egloshayle
Mary do., daur, 6 months, born Feock
The above are 'schedule no 10' and the very next entries for 'schedule no 11' are:-
Grace QUICK, neice, unm., 21, house keeper, born Towednack
Catherine do., daur, unm., 10, scholar, born St Ives
Hmmm - it is coming back to me now!
We worked out that there was no Grace Quick born at Towednack around 1829/30 but there WAS Grace Quick Trewhella.
And Grace Quick Trewhella was definitely a neice of the Thomas Quick in Question.
Now I don't think there is any way that the Mitchel family in the previous household are connected.
But Grace and Catherine 'could' be living in the household of Thomas Quick who, being a mariner, might be at sea and might also have been widowed by this time.
In other words, Grace may have been literally 'house keeping' and looking after Thomas' daughter Catherine while he was away.
Another thing is that if Catherine was born in the March Qtr of 1841 she should surely have been found in the 1841 Census.
And it also seems as if she may have been the only child which means it may be worth looking at deaths around that early part of 1841.
Although I would have thought Thomas would have re-married earlier than 1853 had he been widowed so early.
More to ponder on.

I would like any thoughts or, in particular, any help that might drift my way with this one.
More to follow regarding this and also regarding the marriage of Thomas Quick to Elizabeth Hogg - if I can find anything!
