Does anyone know how I can trace any passport application in or around 1879/1880, for passports for a family to South Africa from St Ives? I also guess they were on some form of "cheap travel" to encourage them to emigrate, are details of any such system available? I have also been unable to find the ship they sailed on. Any ideas. Thanks Allan

I can do some look-ups for passport applications if you want to post the names of the people you are looking for. Give as much detail as you can.

Many thanks, I would like to take you up on that offer. The family involved are: Thomas Henry Job 1849, his wife Mary Gordon (Sisley) 1848. His children Harriet 1874,Thomas Henry 1876 and Mary 1878. Other members of the family may also have applied for passports. Living in The Warren,St Ives. They emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa in 1879/1880. Thomas Henry was a Joiner. Hope this is sufficient information. Thanks again Allan :

This is somewhat generic info and is/may not be applicable in this context. Passports only became commonly used around the time of the 1st World War (http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/about-history-overview.asp).
Given that the Cape Colony was a British colony it is unlikely that there was any requirement to have a passport as it was an extension of the State at the time. Both sides of my family migrated to South Africa (Colony of Natal and Cape) between 1865 & 1880 and I know my mother told me that they only acquired passports after WW1 for travel. I have my maternal grandmother's passport issued in the 1930's and she is recorded as British citizen born in the Colony of Natal (1865).
