I just requested a free probate lookup for Joseph thru the online volunteers at Oregon GenWeb, and also requested a lookup of the obits thru Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (the latter might cost me a few cents...) Will see what turns up!

B****Y H*LL - as they say in the classics. That seems to me to be absolute extortion (am I allowed to use that word. ) Don't spend money you may not afford. (I am in the same boat). If there is another way to get the information required then let us try it and then use reciprocal rights to return favours where possible. Let me know how you fare. I will keep exploring things to see what else may turn up to help.

Ooops - you must have been referring to the previous post on page 3... yes, Ancestry is extortionistic, but I guess it caters to the wealthy who don't want to wait 6 weeks for a reply from the local courthouse. I guess if I won a multi-million in the lottery or something I would pay them the extra to get it all sent straight to my PC too... As for the RAOGK lookup, it will probably only be the cost of photocopies, and it is very possible the person will just copy it for free if it is only a dollar or two. They are allowed to charge a copy fee, but many do not.

I never did hear back from the RAOGK person - she wrote once and asked for the name of the specific town - I replied, and that was it. I will have to try and re-email her...

As you get the chance will be fine. Would be nice to sort it out but, in the meantime, we must play the cards we are dealt. Started to take another bit of a look at some of that hmmm - now what is my surname - oh, yeah, Trewhella stuff yesterday. Will try to get back to it soon as I want to sort it out but guess I need to look at priorities a little just now. Think I am done for the night so a quick sit back and relax and then off to the 'land of nod'.

Matthew registered for the draft and claimed exemption due to being required to support his aged father. He states he was born Oct 7 1893 in Shenandoah, PA. At the time of draft registration, at age 24 he resided in Marshfield, Coos, Ore. In the 1930 census he states his father was born in the U.S. (all from Ancestry.com)

So have we now decided that the Joseph who ended up in Oregon is the brother of this Matthew, and is the son of Matthew and Sally (Williams) Trewhella? It's all so confusing!

Ooops!
I see we seem to have already ruled out Matthew and Sally as Joseph's parents, re: Becky's earlier post.
So Joseph is still floating around unattached. He seems to have been adept, however, at following distant Trewhella cousins about! ;D

Calswimmer - welcome back from your absence and nice to have you involved again. Could you please supply the date of Matthew Trewhella's Draft Registration where he claimed exemption. I am worn out right now and, as Zenobia, very confused with a lot of things. In fact, a few of Zenobia's latest comments regarding Joseph Trewhella now require me to take a long and serious look at all information we have discussed to see what else I may glean from it. There is something in our notes that seems to have become a real 'spanner' and I need to be alert to find it. Think I will watch a movie or two while I have some food. "the smallest show on earth" - (Peter Sellers) may be the first I watch.

Duly watched 'the smallest show on earth' with Peter Sellers and it was excellent (1957) Was preparing to get activated tonight when the Fire Brigade Pager alerted me to head out to another fire. At least this was only a few very small unattended burnoffs that we had to take care of. Unlike last Tuesday morning at about 0242 hrs when we were called to a large structure fire at Rutherglen which is about 10 miles from here. All that on top of being offline for a week. OK - now to this latest information. CALSWIMMER - first question is for you:- How did you find this - I guess it must be from local Census records given the Federal Census (or most of it) was destroyed by fire. Given that you have found it I can tell you that I know a bit about this family. What you have now supplied adds to what I already knew. What I need to know is the ages of Elizabeth, Ellen and Mamie J if they were shown in that Census. I knew there was an Elizabeth (Lizzie) in this family who was born at Lancaster, PA 9th September 1877. I also knew there was a Helen (Ellen) with no further detail. BUT - MAMIE J - she is a new one that I would like to know about. The next point here is that this information shows Amelia as AMELIA A which is very interesting. It may point to her maiden name which is, so far, unknown. Amelia was the second wife of Matthew Trewhella and must have married about 1889. (Based on this new information.) Matthew's first wife was Eliza Jane Sparnon and she apparently died in 1888 at Shenandoah, Schuylkill Co. PA. (IGI) WE ARE ALL GETTING ****** CONFUSED Zenobia - I am very much leaning to your earlier views that the Joseph Trewhella who married Elizabeth Curnow in CT in 1867 was probably the son of Matthew TREWHELLA and Sally WILLIAMS. Some of this latest information tends to confirm that possibility. But:- I now need to go check Becky's information about this. Just now I think that we have the right man even though my own earlier thoughts suggested otherwise. Will check Becky's posting and post another note - but then it is food, movie, sleep and work.

Zenobia - please clarify which note from Becky you refer to when you say that we seem to have ruled out Matthew and Sally as parents of Joseph Trewhella. Have just had a quick look through postings and cannot find that to which you refer so I am, once again, confused. My opinion now is that this is most likely where he does belong. Hmmm - That means that I admit to making mistakes. Let me know how you fare and I will work on it a little more.

Ooops - my mistake! I reread a few pages again, and it looks like "Becky's Joseph" of Illogan was determined to be someone else. So then Joseph in Oregon IS the son of Matthew and Sally. I guess.

::)The traditional Cornish Stubborn streak in me has hitherto precluded my admission that your conclusions regarding the Joseph Trewhella who married Elizabeth Curnow might indeed have been correct. But all the evidence and conversation/input provided over the last few months seems to indicate that it must have been the case. A couple of points of interest to note:- The initial information about the Curnow siblings and their respective marriages to Trewhellas came from Bill Curnow (wish I could get a response from him ) Bill explained that Matthew Curnow bn. 17 Jan 1837 Cornwall s/o Matthew married Ann Trewhella at Cheshire CT in 1863. He also mentioned that Matthew died in NV and was buried in the Masonic Cemetery at Virginia City in 1884. Bill also provided information that Matthew's sister Elizabeth (bn. c. 1847) married Joseph Trewhella at Meriden CT in 1867. This is probably where I formed the opinion that Joseph and Ann Trewhella were siblings. The fact that Matthew Curnow (1837-1884) was buried in NV seems to fit a little better with his sister (Elizabeth) and brother-in-law Joseph Trewhella being in Oregon. I have misplaced the relevant notes - but I recall that I worked out that Matthew and Elizabeth Curnow were probably children of Matthew and Phillipa Curnow of Ludgvan. Am now trying to check some entries via IGI to resurrect those notes. Baptisms at Ludgvan:- Matthew 01 Feb 1838 (Bill gave bd. 17 Jan 1837) I have an idea I may have posted some of this on the Curnow Thread so will need to look at that in a moment. Am tired now so will close this note and take a quick look through that Curnow Thread to see what I can find. Otherwise I will need to check through my paperwork and other information here to provide some updates. Then it is eat, watch movie, bed and then work again.

Can't find the info I need right now so must keep searching. I reckon I found the family of Matthew and Phillipa Curnow in the 1851 and/or 1861 Census for Cornwall where it showed the likely children (Matthew and Elizabeth) who married the Trewhellas in CT. I also have an idea that there was something in the Immigration records but I will really need to re-read all notes to find what I am looking for. Really must call it quits for the night and, hopefully, will converse more with all tomorrow.
