Final thought for the night.
Maybe Israel was the father of Mary Quick Roberts and she is named after his mother? And maybe Israel just took over the family and never actually married Jane? And that may be why Jane called herself Jane Smith (not Semmens or Roberts) when Emma Jane was born in 1867?

That would have to be a 'big maybe' only given Ambrose Roberts is recorded as the father when the birth was registered.

Lannanta - thought it time to bring this thread to the fore given the recent information being discussed in Surname Interests by Amy and Sarch.

Looks like the next part of the solution has arrived! Ambrose Roberts, mine agent of Lelant (son of John) married Jane Semmens of Ludgvan (daughter of John) 30th January 1851 at Ludgvan.

Pat - all I have at the moment is that Mary Quick of Church Town Hill age 71 was buried at Ludgvan 19th March 1881. From her age and from the Census records I believe she was baptised 15th April 1810 at Ludgvan daughter of John and Mary Rowe. But it is at that point that I run into problems. I did a fiar bit of work recently on some of the Rowe families of Gulval and Madron with links to Zennor, Towednack and St Ives mainly. The main dilemma is that there are any number of marriages between John Rowe and someone named Mary. And unfortunately the two that I would have thought most likely seem to be elminated through that recent work. After having another look at Ludgvan it appears that Mary had at least three siblings:- John bp. 28th June 1807 Ludgvan Ann bp. 12th July 1812 Ludgvan Emma bp. 22nd January 1815 Ludgvan Emma married Thomas Yulden at St Ives 17th August 1834 and had seven children that I can find. Amongst those children are Emma Rowe Youlden, Richard Rowe Youlding, Mary Rowe Youlden and James Rowe Youlden but unfortunately none of these are given enough clues to identifythe parents. This is something I will have to keep working on. CT

Towednack church is a little gem. I expect you've seen photos. Lelant church too, if you have any ancestors from there. If you haven't already, may I suggest you don't forget to whet your appetite, by having a look in advance at what gravestones are still legible @ Towednack: west-penwith.org.uk/towedmi.htm Sue
