Another success story!
After one heckuva lot of hard work I have finally found the family of John TREWHELA of Salt Lake City, Utah.
I had found some records about John when I was in Salt Lake City in 1994 and I had recently found him in the 1880 US Census.
He died in 1994 and was buried at Mt Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City and his Swedish-born wife Addie (nee Youngberg) was buried there in 1902. (I found her in the 1900 Census).
From the Death Certificate for John I had discovered he was born in Illinois about 1847 and his parents were William and Grace who had been born in England.
I deduced from there that this must be William TREWHELA who married Grace ROWE at Crowan 24th June 1837.
But I had not been able to find any of the family prior to 1880.
Today I settled down with the bit between my teeth (the Terrier? ) and decided to see if I could find them.
I had already exhausted any searches using combinations of Trewhela - usually using TREW*LA or TREW*LER with a couple of other variations thrown in.
So I tried searching for JOHN E born Illinois between 1847 and 1850. (He was always John E in the records I had found).
That gave me nothing so I tried simply searching for 'JOHN' year by year.
I had searched 1846, 1847 and 1848 and decided to change tack for a while.
Let's try searching for WILLIAM, born England 1811-1813.
BINGO - Indexed, would you believe , as TUOMELA!
There they were - William, Grace and their children. ;D
The surname had been overwritten and re-written but with only slight magnification it was easily decipherable as TREWHELA!
As a brief finale to this section of the family - I also found some Archived Newspaper articles about their son John W Trewhela and one of those is extremely interesting to say the least.
It would appear that John happened to meet a fellow by name George T MARTIN and George disclosed that his second name was TREWHELA.
After some discussion about family and 'home' it was discovered that John and George were second cousins.
The reason for the story in the newspaper is that there was apparently a large Trewhela Estate back in England that was to be administered and John may be entitled to part of it.
However my records indicate that the deduced relationship is in error.
It is something I plan to pursue in case my own records are incorrect however I am reasonably certain that they are not.
William, I am sure, was baptised at Crowan 13th February 1811 s/o Benjamin TREWHELA and Margaret EDMUNDS.
George T MARTIN was the son of George MARTIN and Elizabeth Ann TREWHELLA who was a sister to John and Robert TREWHELLA who went to Italy.
There will be more on this!
