Anyone know much about this family from Paul? I don't have time right now to pursue this as I would like so will post the little I have just come across and await feedback. Johanna TREWELLA TREWAVAS d/o John and Sarah bp. 8th June 1834 at Paul I am, of course, most interested in the TREWELLA connection. John TREWAVAS m. Sarah CAREY at Paul 22nd September 1822 Sarah CAREY was bp. 15th November 1801 at Paul d/o Rawley and Jane I can see no direct link to TREWELLA (var.) The name 'Johanna Trewella' is quite speific and, I think, quite pointed. I have an idea as to the possible origins of the name but I currently have no idea of the connection. Would appreciate anyone with any ideas on this posting said thoughts here. I have been called pedantic in the past and there may be no actual 'family connection' - but I would like to know just why someone would use that name if they were not actually connected to the Trewella family. Thanks Londoner - that (Treweke) is most interesting. My information came from a 'recent referral' to the Paul Baptisms 1738-1838 where the name is clearly 'Trewella'. I was about to suggest Treweeke rather than Trewella might be more appropriate for Paul but just noticed that there are only two baptisms recorded for Treweeke and they were back in the 1750's. For Trewhella (var.) there are at least three. (One by a short half head! ;D) But the name 'Johanna Trewhella' has surfaced in a couple of other families around a similar time so ..... Will keep investigating as soon as I have time but thanks for your input which is, as usual, most welcolme. Now - another episode of Wycliffe might be the order of the night. CT

On another tangent, I wonder if Trewavas is linked to the surname Gwavas. From my rough knowledge of Cornish, tre-gwavas would soften the gw to w hence Tre-wavas. Someone told me that sometimes the tre-prefix dropped off Cornish surnames leaving the original root, if this happened whilst the language was still spoken by the name-bearers then we could expect the name to be "grammatically" correct. I was also wondering if Weeks may be connected to Treweek too.

RE: Trewavas Looks like the name should be TREWEEKE. Checking FreeBMD and the only Johana (Joanna) T Trewavas was Johanna Treweek TREWAVAS married George GRUZELIER at St Olave in 1859. And then, apparently widowed, Johanna Treweeke GRUZELIER married either John CAREY or Joseph WATERS at Penzance R.D. in 1876. George GRUZELIER was a mariner and was away from home in 1861 when Johanah and her son George L GRUZELIER (age 1 month) were living at 16 Wesley Square, Paul. So I think I can forget about this one until someone gets involved in TREWAVAS research.
