Following over from the TREMELLEN thread, which involved the PELLAR/PELLOWs, I would like to bring up the BARKERs who seem to have come from Gwinear to St Erth in the mid-18th century.
In particular I am interested in establishing the family of William BARKER who married Jane PELLAR/PELLOW, bap 1748 St Erth, daughter of John PELLAR/PELLOW and Anne(prob. nee KING, widow of Benj. TREMELLEN).
William BARKER and Jane PELLAR were married at St Erth 28 July 1781 (according to parish register). They had four children baptised at St Erth:
Elizabeth: 30 Dec 1781
John: 18 Apr 1784
William: 20 Aug 1786
Thomas: 20 June 1790
Checking the IGI for possible Williams, I found two, both baptised in Gwinear, one in 1747, the son of John and Anne (nee WILLIAMS) BARKER and one in 1750, the son of John and Alice (nee LAWRY) BARKER.
The BARKER-WILLIAMS marriage took place in Gwinear, in 1735. The BARKER-LAWRY marriage took place in St Just in Penwith in 1745.
The John BARKER-Anne WILLIAMS children (according to the IGI) were all baptised at Gwinear:
John: bap 7 May 1744
Richard: bap 1 Nov 1735, d 6 Sep 1737
Anne: bap 23 Oct 1737
Richard: bap 26 Aug 1739
Jane: bap 4 Feb 1741 d 26 Feb 1743
William: bap 22 Sept 1747
Jane: bap 22 Sept 1747
It appears that the father of these children, John BARKER, may be the one who is buried at Gwinear, 11 June 1750.
The John BARKER and Alice LAWRY marriage produced the following children baptised at Gwinear:
Thomas: 5 May 1746
John: 7 Dec 1747
William: 16 Apr 1750
Richard: 11 Apr 1752
Alice: 17 Aug 1754
Elizabeth: 8 May 1757
Nicholas: 28 June 1760
Jane: 12 Nov 1763
Mary: 11 May 1767
The John BARKER who is the father of these children may be the one who died in 1774.
I am hypothesizing at this point that "my" William is the one baptised in 1750, the son of John and Alice (LAWRY) BARKER. I am basing this on several things, but it doesn't seem to me a terribly substantial argument at the moment, so if anyone can shed light on it and either further support it, or knock it down, I would be grateful.
My "evidence" is:
1) The family that moved to St Erth, judging from the baptisms and marriages recorded there in the last half of the 18th century appear to be the children of John and Alice. Thomas and wife Joan live there. Nicholas lives there. Alice marries there. As does William when he marries Jane PELLAR.
2) William BARKER and wife JANE named their third son, Thomas. Jane had no brothers named Thomas. Her father was John. So was his. The second son appears to be named after himself. The third son may have been named after his eldest brother, Thomas. It seems possible, too, that his grandfather may have been the Thomas BARKER married at Gwinear in 1705. In any case, the family of John and Anne (WILLIAMS) BARKER contain no children named Thomas.
That's it. Not a lot. If anyone is researching either of these BARKER families, I would like to compare notes and learn more. One of them, at least, appears to have lived at Bodraverran. I need to do more research to find out which.
