I could do with a little help here to try and solve a problem with the ALLEN family.
This began with efforts to try and identify the Anna ALLEN who married John Thomas TREWHELLA about 1853/4 in the US.
From the favious Census records (US) I know she was born in England about 1830.
The 1900 Census gives her birth specifically as August 1830. (I am wary but her age is consistent.)
I know that she could have come from almost anywhere in England but am inclined to think it more likely that she was from Cornwall.
She stated she emigrated to America in 1853 so if she was married so soon after arrival I would expect that she was possibly known to John TREWHELLA.
A baptism at Ludgvan for Ann d/o James and Ann ALLEN 22nd August 1830 looks very promising.
There are other issues to deal with here arising from members of the household in the 1860 US Census but I will deal with them later.
The next, and most confusing, part of the problem came whilst searching for possible siblings when I noticed entries involving the QUICK surname!
Given a Paull QUICK was one of the people in the 1860 household with Ann and John TREWHELLA in New Jersey I felt inclined to pursue this.
The fist problem is the parents - Josiah and Grace ALLEN.
I cannot find a marriage for them so I am not yet sure of how the Quick name got involved.
And nor can I find a baptism for Josiah ALLEN!
Herewith the tale ....
In 1841 Josiah and his family are at Menwidden, Ludgvan and Josiah's age is recorded as 25 and occupation Blacksmith.
In 1851 Josiah is at Trencrom, Lelant but this time his age is written as 30 and his birthplace as KENWYN.
In 1861 Josiah is at Tregellas, Ludgvan and he is now age 47 and states his birthplace as LELANT.
In 1871 Josiah is at Canonstown, Ludgvan. His age is recorded as 55 and his birthplace is now GULVAL.
Anyone confused yet?
Grace, his wife, (if you can beliee the Census) born at MADRON about 1811 but she died prior to the 1861 Census so I cannot be certain at the moment.
In 1854 Josiah married Mary Ann ARTHUR and therein lies another tale.
She brought with her a daughter named Mary Ann who married William James CHARLESTON at St Erth in 1862.
I cannot yet find a baptism for Mary Ann so I do not yet know if she was an illegitimate child or if her mother had been married when she was born. (Again no marriage yet found.)
But that ain't all folks!
IGI records baptisms for a number of children of Josiah and Grace at both Ludgvan and Lelant and amongst them are Lavinia Quick ALLEN and Grace Quick ALLEN along with John Kissell, James Trembath and Humphry ALLEN.
From IGI:-
Lavinia Quick ALLEN born 12th May 1840 and baptised at Ludgvan 12th May 1842.
Lavinia appears in the 1841 Census with Josiah and Grace and her age is recorded as 2.
In 1851 Lavinia is age 11 and stated birthplace is TOWEDNACK.
IN 1861 Lavinia is age 21 and stated birthplace is LUDGVAN.
CFHS Baptisms for Towednack:-
Lavinia d/o Josiah and Grace ALLEN bp. 9th October 1839
Are you all sure you are not confused?
If anyone out there has any knowledge of this family - especially JOSIAH - I would appreciate you taking a rather large leap forward.
BTW - son Josiah was baptised 27th September 1837 at Ludgvan yet in 1851 he is recorded as JOSEPH!
