Hello Anne and welcome to Penwith Genealogy. Let's see what we can do to help with your elusive Martin Martins. First off - I have just had a look at the transcript of Phillack marriages which offers the following:- Martin Martins, age 20, labourer of Bodriggy (father CHARLES Martins, carrier) married Eliza Oatey, age 20, of Bodriggy (father James Oatey, miner) 5th June 1841 at Phillack witnesses:- Jeremiah Oatey, John Carbines Eliza d/o James and Martha Oatey of Bodriggy (miner) bp. 28th October 1821 phillack It would appear Martin was not baptised at Phillack so I will have to search around to see if I can find him. But the transcript definitely shows that his father was Charles. CT

Anne - this is most curious. I can find no further reference to Martin at Phillack except for the baptism of daughter Eliza. There seems to be also nothing about a Charles Martin at Phillack during the relevant period. Now I am guessing that you must have a copy of the marriage certificate for Martin and Eliza? If it states on the certificate that Martin was the name of Martin's father then we know we have a problem either with the certificate itself or with the transcript of Phillack marriages that I have where it says the father was Charles. At this point I would be thinking that it is the certificate that might be in error. I came across a marriage certificate here at home a couple of days ago which highlights some problems. The groom was William Trewheeler and his name is indexed as such in the GRO index as well as being transcribed as such in the OPC records. It is likewise recorded as William in the transcript of Pendeen marriages. YET - on the certificate itself the groom's name is entered as JAMES! Even though he signed as William. This would have to have been an error by the person who filled out the details when the certificate was ordered. In case you are not aware - what I encountered when ordering certificates in Cornwall was that the clerk would locate the relevant Register and then copy the details from there to a Blank Offical Marriage Certificate. So we are relying on yet another transcription. The next thing I would like to know is the name of each of the other children of Martin and Eliza that were born in Cornwall. If possible please supply the place of baptism and the date and I might be able to track something further from there. CT

Thankyou all for speedy interest so far.I had noted the transcipt being Charles, but Charles Martins are fairly short supply.Children are Eliza 1841,Maryanne 1843,William Bowden 1844, James H.The Bowden middle is used in later generations.Children born in Australia-Martha Martins 1850,Thomas Martins 1856,Catherine Martins 1857,Mary Martins 1859, Joseph Martins1859,Mary Martins 1861, Edwin Martins .I have William Bowden 1844 listed as being born in Phillick on his Birth certificate but could not locate him in the Philick Trascript.William Bowden appears to be the only sibling to drop the s off. Martin Martins 1821 died at Wallaroo South Australia in1892.

It does not look like Martin Martin(s) is a name that is thick on the ground either. I had been hoping that the names of Martin's children might offer a worthwhile clue. Bowden is the only possibility but even that is drawing a blank so far. Some further digging is required I think. CT
