My experience was that the coast road from Zennor to Treveale was a lot longer than the road from Treveale to Towednack.

I went to The National Archives last year and looked at the original rolls, mainly focussing on trying to find Penberthy/Shakerley in St Just, but I did photograph one or two other local rolls whilst there. That's really interesting. I might be curious to see these for myself. What's the procedure with searching them at the National Archives? Trencrom

Anne & I just turned up, albeit Anne had done some research online beforehand to try and narrow down what to look at. It didnt take long for documents to arrive with us. The military records were also easy to read. I suggest anyone planning a trip has a good look through their website first: www.nationalarchives.gov.ukMike

OK, thanks for that. Good to know you can just turn up there. I can think of several Penwith parishes whose subsidy records I might want to have a look at there.

Just a query here.. How sure are we that Francis Phillips son of John Phillips (which we do know) and maybe Elanor is that accurate? any one had a look at the original record or are we going by a transcript? As has been said none of the descendants have named a daughter Eleanor, I've checked that one myself also, but there are Joan's which I find a little strange.

That information was supplied by Trencrom and is taken from the Bishops Transcripts of Zennor. The Zennor Parish Register prior to 1713 is quite fragmented and faded so as to make it unreadable except for a few entries. Images of that register are now available on FamilySearch so you can see for yourself. Go to:- www.familysearch.org/Click on British Isles, Browse 202,xxx images, Cornwall, Zennor and then look down the list to find Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, 1599-1768. Click on that link and you can then view the images. CT

I havent looked at the IGI online images before and they could certainly be a very useful tool. However as CT says the Zennor records are very poor and for the moment I have given up trying to find 1654! A word of caution though, just looked at the first film listed for St.Levan for my Angove/Waters/Shetford links and, finding none of them, realised these are actually Lewannick, so IGI have this film mis-filed

Mike - there are a number of films in that collection that are 'mis-filed' or simply incorrectly labelled. In Phillack you will find two films that are actually Philleigh as well.
But for St Levan - no registers survive prior to 1699 so there is little point searching for 1654. And I am not sure about the existence of any BTs.
Sennen also sadly has nothing prior to 1700.

I have just been working my way through the Phillips post, a lot of very useful information. Regarding the will of Matthew Phillips 1628 I have read it as the 3 children of son Thomas and the names as Henry, Jane and Matthew? I have had a look back at my copy of the will and I think there is one less flourish on the Jane than for James. Regarding John marrying Elnor. I was musing about this overnight and it occurred to me that there is no obvious origin on the Phillips side for the name Francis which continues right down to my Great- grandfather in this line but not in the lines from the other children of Matthew. So I went looking for an Elnor with a father called Francis and discovered in 1607 at Zennor ---nor dau of Fris JOHN which is interesting. It would make them quite a young couple to marry in 1625 but not impossible.

Sorry Deborah but you have been misled here by a mistranscription by Hoblyn. In fact Hoblyn has made three errors with this particular record!! I am looking at an image of the original register with this being one of the few pages that is at all legible. The three errors are as follows:- Error 1 - the year is 1602 and not 1607 Error 2 - the child's name ends in 't' and may even be ___ret - it is certainly not ending with 'nor' Error 3 - the father's name is EVES John and not Fris. It was good thinking Deborah but unfortunately Mr Hoblyn didn't have the tools that we have available today to read some of these old documents.
