Hello Staplehouse - let me see if I might be able to help you with this little problem.
I am not actually related to any of these Thomas families although I do have the occasional Thomas name marrying into the family elsewhere.
But I will try and help anyway!
You are probably aware that Thomas is not the easiest name to research and Zennor with that name combined can be even more daunting.
Some years ago I started to try and piece together all the families of Zennor and Towednack so I have a little knowledge and a lot of information recorded.
Now - I do have the marriage of William Thomas and Catherine Stevens in my database.
The only child I currently show for them is daughter Catherine who was baptised 29th November 1801 at Towednack.
Catherine married George Thomas 21st February 1825 at Zennor and I currently show five children for them.
I don't have any parents recorded at the moment for her father William as it became too difficult way back then to determine just who they might be.
As I get time I would like to work right through the scenario to determine for myself if William was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth but that is something I try and do as a matter of course.
Let's work for now on the basis that he was indeed son of Thomas and Elizabeth.
Thomas and Elizabeth appear certainly to have not married at Zennor so I have turned to IGI to look for some possibilities.
I can find only five that 'might' be the right one but there is always the possibility that IGI does not have the one we want.
13th February 1762 Thomas Thomas married Elizabeth Thomas at Breage
I don't know where IGI got this one from but it does not appear in my transcript of Breage marriages!
This does not have the usual Batch No for Breage but has an 'A' prefix which usually means it is a random batch of events.
It is possible that the marriage occurred 'somewhere' and that one of the parties was named as being 'of Breage'.
In fact - this marriage actually occurred at Stithians and there is no mention of an abode for either party in the Stithians transcript.
6th November 1763 Thomas Thomas married Elizabeth Pollimountain at Gwinear
Phillimore shows no additional information for this marriage but there were Thomas families at Gwinear.
14th February 1765 Thomas Thomas married Elizabeth Downing at Budock
Both parties were 'of Budock' and a John Thomas was one of the witnesses.
5th January 1772 Thomas Thomas married Elizabeth Jennings at Gwennap
No further information in the Transcript for this one either and again there were a number of Thomas families at Gwennap.
All the above a quite a distance from Zennor which, although not impossible, certainly indicates it is less likely that any of them would be correct.
The marriage that interests me most is this one:-Thomas Thomas, husbandman married Elizabeth Quick at Ludgvan 20th April 1774
This one is particularly interesting firstly because it is not far from Zennor but secondly, and perhaps more importantly, because I can find only two children baptised at Ludgvan to this couple -
John s/o Thomas and Elizabeth bp. 23rd November 1783
Mary d/o Thomas and Elizabeth bp. 21st August 1791
Ooops! - it looks like these children may well not belong to this marriage.
Phillimore also shows that a Thomas Thomas, tinner, married Elizabety Ayrs at Ludgvan 7th October 1783
A child baptised less than 2 months after a marriage was not unusual and was still happening more than 100 years later.
So I think we can leave those two children to the later marriage.
This still leaves the 1774 marriage to Elizabeth Quick.
A lot of work has been done on the Quick family over the last couple of years and this Elizabeth is still one of our 'loose ends'.
At least we now have a possible marriage to work with so we should see if it is possible to build a family around them or at least find out what happened to them.
One problem though is that there was another Thomas Thomas baptising children at Zennor in the 1770s.
He was the son of George Thomas and Phillis Quick who married at Zennor 26th February 1733.
Thomas married Mary Richards at Zennor 29th February 1772 and the following children (no mother mentioned) belong to him:-
Mary bp. 4th May 1772
Phyllis bp. 22nd May 1774
William bp. 10th March 1776
Anne bp. 13th December 1778
George bp. 3rd November 1782
This leaves only the baptism of William to Thomas and Elizabeth at Zennor.
The other logical place to look for this family would be Gulval which shares a border with Ludgvan to the East and Zennor to the North.
Checking Gulval baptisms and there are only two children baptised there to Thomas Thomas:-
Thomas bp. 18th June 1775
Nicholas bp. 28th December 1776
And there is no marriage for a Thomas Thomas to Elizabeth at Gulval!
So right at this point in time I would suggest the working scenario to be:-
Thomas Thomas married Elizabeth Quick 20th April 1774 at Ludgvan
Thomas bp. 18th June 1775 at Gulval s/o Thomas
Nicholas bp. 28th December 1776 at Gulval s/o Thomas
William bp. 16th May 1779 at Zennor s/o Thomas and Elizth.
See what you think about it and and get back to me here and we will see what more can be found.
