Revisiting my Cornish roots after an extended detour of several years research for ancestors based in the north of England, I have hit a conundrum that may shed a little light on a possibly related to a post several years on Jane Bosvargus who married Hercules Glandfield (see note at end of this post).
My 7xgreat-grandparents were Christopher Millwood (c.1705 - 1763) who married Grace Potter (c.1708 – 1789) on 7 Nov 1730 at Phillack.
So far I have not been able to identify parents for either Christopher Millwood or Grace Potter, but in relation to Christopher Millwood, I recently found something that provides tantalising clues, but as yet I cannot make the exact connection. But it might help explain the marriage of their daughter Jane Millwood to Arundell Pryor (descendant of the Arundells of Truthall).
The reference I found was in the transcript of the will of one Joan Phillips, widow, of Phillack that is dated 22 Oct 1722 and was proved in 1728 (she was buried 1728 at Phillack).
Her will mentions the following people (amongst others):
son: GREGORY PHILLIPPS
cousin: CHRISTOPHER MILLWOOD 4 L to help put him to some trade
grandchild: JASPER PHILLIPPS
cousins: HUGH PAWLEY & WILLIAM BUSVARGUS, gents
I suspect (but at the moment cannot prove) that Christopher Millwood’s mother was probably a Pawley, and sister to Joan Phillips above, and that at such Joan Phillips' "cousin" Christopher was actually her nephew. Joan appears to have named a brother and another nephew as cousins (see below).
Hoping that someone else may have some information to provide clues to the missing pieces.
After spending some time piecing together the family of Joan Phillips (maker of the will) I have the following:
Thomas Phillips (prob. a son of Gregory) married 31 Jan 1671 at Lelant to Joan Pawley. They had a son Gregory in 1672 at Phillack and Thomas appears to have died the same year. It seems that Joan never remarried (or else reverted to an earlier married name?), as she is still the widow Phillips fifty odd years later at the time of her will.
Their son Gregory Phillips married Jone Purefoy (who was likely a cousin of some kind and quite possibly a first cousin – see below) and they appear to be the parents of the Jasper Phillips, grandchild of Joan Phillips mentioned in her will as primary beneficiary and executor.
The “cousins” of Joan Phillips mentioned as gents - and as assistant executors to Jasper Phillips - seem to be Joan’s brother and nephew. This seems to be yet another example of a loose usage of cousin around this time period (similar to the questions raised in the Bosvargus-Greinfield thread)
Joan Pawley was the daughter of Hugh Pawley who married Joan Searle at Lelant in 1619. (The Busvargus lineage in Burkes Commoners Vol 4, pages 296-297, also includes in the footnotes an overview of the Pawley family.) Hugh Pawley & Joan Searle’s daughter Prudence Pawley married William Busvargus in 1648, and had three known sons: John in 1651, William in 1660 and Hugh in 1663. William Busvargus Snr died in 1665, but it looks like his son William is the William Busvargus, Gent, mentioned in the Joan Phillips will. (While William is listed as “no more known” after his birth, his brother Hugh is recorded as having lived till 1742.)
Hugh and Joan (nee Searle) Pawley are noted in Burke’s Commoners as having, beside Prudence, another four sons and four daughters, one of the sons being William who apparently moved to Bideford, Devonshire.
Joan (Searle) Pawley died around 1678 and left a will, the transcript of which names and confirms more of the family (including amongst others):
( ) BUSVARGUS (although not name in the transcript, this is Prudence)
daughters: JANE EDWARDS, MARGARET PUREFOY, MARGERY PENLEASE, and JOANE PHILLIPPS.
grandsons: WILLIAM BUSVARGUS, HUGH BUSVARGUS, JOHN BUSVARGUS, HUGH PUREFOY.
granddaughters: MARY PUREFOY, MARGERY MASON
GREGORY PHILLIPS (relationship not noted, but would be grandson)
AMOS s/o THOMAS MASON (relationship not noted, probably grandson)
son: HUGH PAWLEY
Margaret Pawley apparently married John Purefoy before 1671 (daughter Mary baptised at Phillack 1671) and it is possible they are the parents of the Jone Purefoy who marries Margaret's nephew Gregory Phillips (i.e. it appears that they were first cousins).
Granddaughter Margery Mason was born Margery Busvargus and married Thomas Mason in 1671, so Amos Mason son of Thomas must be her son. It is not clear at this time who was the father of Margery Busvargus, but given the only son of Joan Pawley mentioned in her will is Hugh, it is plausible to consider him as a strong possibility. Especially as her son William and his family was based up in Devon at the time. However there are two other sons (names unknown) who may also be a chance to be Margery's father.
The Busvargus family is also descended from the family of Hill of Trenethick (Hill of Wendron & Egloshayle, p231 in Vivian's Visitations of Cornwall) through whom they have connections to the Vivyan, Erisey, Trefusis, Penrose and other well connected families - the result being the Busvargus family is distently connected to Arundell, Granville, Carminow and other major Cornish families.
The Pawley family can also trace their lineage back to the Arundell family. Hugh Pawley snr (husband of Joan) was the great-great-grandson of Robert Arundell of Camborne, acknowledged bastard son of John Arundell of Trerice (d.1580) by an unknown mistress.
All of which suggests that the Phillips and Busvargus families are indeed well placed and connected.
The connection back to Jane Busvargus and Hercules Greinfield? The suggestion by John Tanner about the ancestry of Hercules Greinfield possibly connecting to the Grenfell family becomes more plausible given the apparently good standing of the Busvargus family.
It also raises the question of where Jane Busvargus (wife of Hercules) might fit into the recorded Busvargus lineage. Datewise it would seem that she should fit in as potentially the daughter of John Lethon/Busvargus and his wife Janepher Sparnon. The name Jane would also be consistent given it is a common variant of Jennifer.
Together with the possible Greinfield/Grenfell/Oats/Otts connections, these families are proving of particular interest to me at the moment because of the apparent inter-relationships.
I am also descended from Julian(a) Otts who married Paskow Greinfield. Julian(a)'s parents were John Otts who married Mary Cock (daughter of John Cock and Margaret Williams), and as such that line of Otts and Williams may well also have unidentified connections to the Greinfield lineage proposed by John Tanner.
Look forward to assistance to try to sort out the Millwood connection and any other input that members can provide.

Margaret Pawley apparently married John Purefoy before 1671 (daughter Mary baptised at Phillack 1671) and it is possible they are the parents of the Jone Purefoy who marries Margaret's nephew Gregory Phillips (i.e. it appears that they were first cousins).
