I'm wondering if anyone else is descended from John Richards and Hannah Stevens of Lelant. They are my 4th great grandparents. John Richards is buried from Lelant on Jan 14, 1856, but I've been unable to get a death record for him. Either he was mis-indexed, or not indexed at all. The Ancestry.com list of death records does not include him. Hannah Stevens (Stephens) Richards died in St. Ives on March 28, 1862.
I believe John to be the John, bastard son of Mary Richards, baptized at Crowan on July 6, 1783.
I'm descended from their daughter Anne (Nannie) who married Peter Curnow in 1847. I am curious about other children in the family. The children I have for John Richards and Hannah Stevens, all born Crowan, are: Anne (1816-1817) Anne (1818-1897, Mrs. Peter Curnow) John (1820-1857?) married Susan or Susanna Stevens (I believe that after he died, Susan accompanied her children to the US) Margaret (1823-1844) Jennifer (1826-1828) Peternell (1827-?) She often went by "Pee". I'm curious about what happened to her. She was informant for her mother's death in 1862 and I can't find a death or marriage for her) William (1831-?) Richard (1834- 1897?) I believe that this Richard died in Thames, NZ on Dec. 31, 1897.
Thanks for any info! Steven Belanger Davenport, FL

Hi Steven I believe your John Richards would be the death in the FreeBMD index March Q 1856 Penzance RD, Volume 5c Page 210. www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.plThis corresponds to the burial Lelant of John Richards age 72 of Trelyon St Ives , not so far from where John was in 1851 census, at Chyangweal Lelant. Peternell: I can find her as Pennella on Freecen in 1871 at Ayr Halsetown/St Ives age 38 with son Thomas Henry Trevorrow age 7 born Lelant. Perhaps that son might help in finding her..... Sue

Hey Sue.... when I sent for the death record using those values, I got a message back saying that they couldn't find the record. Not sure what to try next.
Thanks for the tip on Peternell... I'll have to see if she and Pennella are the same person. Certainly looks promising! Steve

Hmm; well the GRO image for that indexed record looks to me like 5c 210. It is possible the clerk made an error back in 1856.... My understanding is that there are 2 sources to obtain BMD certificates. One is the national GRO, the other is the local Register Office. So if you are keen to have a copy of the death certificate, it would be worth pursuing the other of these 2 avenues (i.e. the one you have not previously taken.) It would also be worth requesting the “conditional” approach (see explanation on FreeBMD.) www.freebmd.org.uk/Certificates.htmlFor Cornwall, I believe the 1st line of contact would be registration@cornwall.gov.uk Sue

"Peternell: I can find her as Pennella on Freecen in 1871 at Ayr Halsetown/St Ives age 38 with son Thomas Henry Trevorrow age 7 born Lelant. Perhaps that son might help in finding her....."
I rather think Thomas Henry Trevorrow age7 in 1871 has by 1881 morphed into Henry Richards age 17, born Lelant nephew to Anne Curnow (widow of Peter) at Hellesvean/Halsetown. So, Master Richards/Trevorrow no longer with mother Peternell/Pennella, which doesn't help.

I'm seeing a pattern with the Richards and Trevorrows. Ann Richards Curnow is next to a Trevorrow family in 1861/1871/1881 and a William Richards (her brother?) married Mary Jane Trevorrow in 1860. Peternell (Pennella) seems to be gone by 1881, although I don't see a transcripted death for her.
Thanks for all your help Sue!

Hey Sue et al... One more question about my John Richards. He is listed as a pensioner, and on his wife's death record it says that she was the widow of John Richards, a soldier. I'm curious about military service by Cornwall miners. What sort of military service would he have conscripted to? Are there any records of their service? Since he was born about 1783 and married in 1815, I'm guessing that his service might've been in the 1810 timeframe, but I have no idea. Thanks for any guidance! Steve

Hi Steve
During the last year I have found more & more Cornish men who were soldiers - Napoleonic Wars & all that. Men who as you say one might have thought their obvious work would be mining. But the bottom was falling out of the mining market early 19th century I think, whereas GB was busy warmongering/empire-building/protecting all over the place!
1851 your John Richards is recorded as a Chelsea Pensioner. (I.e a pensioned off UK soldier.) Both Family Search & Ancestry I think have any Chelsea Pensioner records ex the National Archives, although you'll need a bit of patience searching....
Ah, no you won't! FS has just the one John Richards born c1783 Cornwall in their record set "United Kingdom, Chelsea Pensioners' Service Records". It says image viewable on FindMy Past or at an FS centre......

Found it! Thanks! I typically keep some credits with FindMyPast...particularly for their newspaper archive. I'm very curious about this guy... the record says that he served "three years: three months but being rendered totally unfit for service being blind." On either the 1841 or 1851 census, it shows that John was "blind", but I don't know if this means he was totally blind or just visually impaired. He must've lived much of his life this way, since his discharge came before his marriage and any of his children. Seems odd that anyone would've married a blind man back then. Thanks for the tip! Steve

Just in case anyone is interested in Thomas Henry Trevorrow (Henry Richards) mentioned above.... I just got his birth record. Born March 20, 1864, baptized April 11, 1864 at Lelant. Father not listed on the record but is assumed to be a Trevorrow. Mother is Penelope Richards.

Another follow up. I finally got a death record for John Richards. Died January 10, 1856 at St. Ives, John Richards, Male, age 72, Government pensioner, died a natural death, cause unknown...signed William Hichens, coroner. Registered 7 February 1856. I'm happy to email anyone a copy if interested.

Hi Steven - I have been following this thread due to the Curnow connection so would be interested in a copy of the death certificate please. Rather than advertise email addresses on the open forum it would be easiest if I send you an email and you simply reply to my message and attach a copy.

Hello, Steven,
What information do you have regarding the death of Jennifer Richards (born 1826) in 1828? I think she is the "Jane" with the family in 1841 Census who married Francis Perry (daughter of John Richards profession = soldier on the OPC marriage record.) I have found the family in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan in 1850 after which Francis married Elizabeth Richards back in Lelant in 1853, and I believe then moved to Australia.
Thanks,
Zibetha

I meant to include the information that my 4x great-grandmother was Mary Richards born 1787 in Lelant. She married Thomas Hocken, a maltster. The family ran the Praed's Arms Inn.
