Hicks - From Cornwall to the South Pacific

Does anyone have information on a JOHN HICKS who left Cornwall around the early 1800s and headed to the South Pacific. Birth records for 3 of his children are listed (in FIJI) but I have no records of his death.

Wondering if he might have moved on to another of the colonial countries or even returned home. There is mention of his timeline in Fiji around the 1860s which list him as an Oil Trader.

His children's births are recorded as follows :

Eliza Mary Hicks - 1848 Fiji
Joseph Hicks - 1856 Fiji
William Hicks - est. 1850 Fiji

(((Another HICKES family is also present in Fiji but there is no connection between the 2 families. EDWARD HICKES (b. 1841 in Cornwall) arrived in Fiji long AFTER JOHN HICKS presence in the islands. Edward's brother Weston Hickes followed not long after.)))

Not sure how we can help on this one but John Hicks is the second man that Fiji seems to have swallowed since this site has been operating!

Back in 2007 we were hunting for Captain Richard Noall of the Fiji Islands and so far no trace of him has been found either!

The 3 children were all born in Fiji.

ELIZA MARY HICKS - born 1848 Fiji (no other records found)

JOSEPH HICKS - born 1856 Fiji - listed under Registered Seamen born in Fiji that joined the Royal Navy. He served aboard the NYMPHE between Dec 1875 and May 1876.

WILLIAM HICKS - born approx 1850 Fiji - His extensive timeline is recorded all over the South Pacific. He served as second mate on board the "Leonora" for the notorious Bully Hayes (known as the last of the Buccaneers). William was also my paternal great-grandfather.

Have you checked the National Archives DocumentsOnline at all?

It might be possible that there is some record in their collection of records.

Ah yes! The National Archives was the source of finding records for JOSEPH HICKS actually, but I am doing a more extensive search through the site today

Let's hope there is something tucked away there that will give us some clues about where to look next.

I think we need something more than just his name and the fact that he spent sometime in the South Pacific and fathered three children in Fiji.

But at least that is something.
