Calswimmer - I am not sure where you are up to with your query about Stephen Penberthy and Dorcas Penglase but I have done a bit of work on them to see what I could find.
And it certainly seems that longevity was not part of the family!
As you know Stephen Penberthy married Dorcas Penglase at Phillack 26th September 1801.
I have found seven children for them as follows:-
1. Stephen bp. 8th August 1802 Phillack
2. William bp. 2nd September 1804 Phillack
3. Elizabeth bp. 19th October 1806 Phillack
4. Anna Maria bp. 1st January 1809 Phillack
5. John bp. 10th March 1811 Phillack
6. Richard bp. 25th April 1813 Phillack
7. Benjamin bp. 31st December 1815 Phillack
Stephen senior was buried at Phillack 17th December 1817 age 37 of Ventonleague.
From that I have now determined that he was baptised at Lelant 1st October 1780 son of Stephen Penberthy and Elizabeth Ninnes who married 2nd April 1777 at Lelant.
I have not yet tried to work out where this early Stephen belongs but will do so at some stage later.
Dorcas was buried at Lelant 14th August 1849 age 66 of Ventonlege.
She would have been born about 1783 but I can find absolutely no trace of a baptism for her as yet.
Of the children of Stephen and Dorcas:-
1. Stephen married Elizabeth Cottay at St Austell 9th February 1828.
He was buried at Phillack 7th March 1847 age 44 of Ventonlege.
Elizabeth was buried at Phillack 6th August 1849 age 45 of Ventonlege.
Children:-
John bp. 8th February 1829 Phillack
And here we have an unusual problem.
John married Jane EDWARDS at Phillack 14th August 1851 and she was buried five days later on the 19th August 1851 at Phillack age 21 of Ventonlege.
What is strange is that her father was named as Joseph Laity when she married and she was resident at Ventonlege.
However I have not been able to find any record of her in the 1841 or 1851 Census and I cannot find a baptism for her.
John then married Ann daughter of Thomas MILLS at Phillack 27th November 1852.
I have not yet checked for children.
Stephen bp. 28th November 1830 Phillack
William bp. 29th July 1832 Phillack
Elizabeth bp. 14th June 1835 St Austell and buried 12th August 1849 at Phillack age 14 of Ventonlege.
Richard bp. 29th October 1837 Phillack
Catherine born 1841 and buried 3rd July 1844 at Phillack age 3 of Ventonlege
Benjamin born 1844 and buried 17th June 1844 at Phillack age 10 months of Ventonlege
In 1851 the four sons (John, Stephen, William and Richard) were living with their aunt Elizabeth Northy but I have not yet gone beyond that date.
2. William son of Stephen and Dorcas was buried 17th April 1832 at Phillack age 27 of Venton League and it appears that he did not marry.
3. Elizabeth married Peter NORTHEY 6th March 1831 at Phillack and, as mentioned above, had her four nephews with her at the 1851 Census.
Peter and Elizabeth had eight children that I have found so far.
4. Anna Maria married William NICHOLLS 21st February 1831 at Phillack.
I have not yet tried to find children for them and I do not yet know anything about William Nicholls.
5. John was buried at Phillack 30th July 1817 age 6 of Ventonleague.
6. Richard was buried at Phillack 13th February 1835 age 21 of Venton League.
7. Benjamin married Eliza daughter of Peter ELLIS 12th April 1838 at Phillack.
There appear to have been no children to this marriage and Benjamin was buried 5th April 1840 at Phillack age 24 of Newport.
As I mentioned earlier - longevity does not seem to have been a strong point in this family.
I will see if I can identify Peter NORTHEY, William NICHOLLS and Eliza ELLIS.
Will also check for children for Anna Maria NICHOLLS and John PENBERTHY as well as find out what happened to the other children of Stephen and Elizabeth.
Hope this is of help.
