 Woolcock of Phillack and Hayle
« Thread Started on Nov 7, 2009, 10:27pm »

Looking for my paternal grandfather's ancestors. His name was Alfred Woolcock born 1910. His parents were William Woolcock and Catherine (?) Glasson. He also had a sister named Catherine and a few brothers (I think their names were Charles (died WW1) and Cedric). I have very little info and would love it if someone had some for me. Thank you

Hello Islandgirl

I cannot help you very much with the Woolcock family, however I may be able to start you on your way with Alfred's mother Catherine nee Glasson.

If you had access to the 1891 census you would see the Woolcock family living at Hayle - William and Kate and three sons and a daughter - William J., Thomas H., Charlie and Carrie (probably short for Catherine). Mother Kate is 33 and from Gwinear.

So looking further back in the census years - 1871 and 1881, Catherine or Kate was living at Trenawin in Gwinear with her parents John Glasson and Christian nee Rowe. Kate had a number of siblings including Elizabeth, Thomas, Christian Rashleigh, Harriet, John, Emily, Selina, Susan, William and Ellen.

It is relatively easy to follow the Glasson line back a further few generations as they were generally living at Gwinear, however this family is not part of my family so I have not documented it. I will leave you with this to start with and if you wish to keep going further back I may be able to assist you.

Lannanta - that would be the 1901 Census. ;)

In 1891 William and Kate were living at Venton League, Phillack.

William WOOLCOCK, head, mar., 33, general labourer, Phillack
Kate do., wife, mar., 23, Gwithian
William J do., son, 6, Phillack
Thomas H do., son, 5, Phillack
Carrie do., daughter, 2, Phillack
Elizabeth do., mother, widow, 67, Phillack

Note that Kate's birthplace has changed from Gwinear in 1901 to Gwithian in 1891.

This Census is handy because William's mother is living with them and it might help to track him down.

Regarding Carrie - I believe this is more likely to be Caroline rather than Catherine but will see what I can find.

In 1881 as Lannanta says Kate is living with her parents John and Christiana.

But I would suggest the place they were living was Trevarnon, Gwithian.

In 1881 William Woolcock was living with his widowed mother Elizabeth.

I will have to continue this later as I have a call to go help with another burnoff.

I am back! :)

Okay - in 1871 we now have William as son of William and Elizabeth Woolcock.

Caroline Rowe, Ventonlague, Phillack

William WOOLCOCK, head, mar., 66, miner, Phillack
Elizabeth do., wife, mar., 48, Phillack
William do., son, 14, Phillack

This has the suggestion of a second marriage - at least for William. :-/

I cannot find this marriage at Phillack and there are a couple of possibilities in FreeBMD so more work will need to be done to determine the correct parents for William.

Have found the family also in 1861:-

Ventonleague, Phillack

Willm WOOLCOCK, head, mar., 55, general labourer, REDRUTH
Elizabeth do., wife, mar., 38, Phillack
Willm do., son, 4, Phillack

Looking at the 1851 Census and comparing possibilities with FreeBMD I am inclined to think the following marriage will be the one:-

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Jun 1851 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blewett Elizabeth Redruth 9 330
Bright Elizabeth Ann Redruth 9 330
Burrows William Henry Redruth 9 330
Miles Elizabeth Redruth 9 330
Noble Thomas Redruth 9 330
Woolcock William Redruth 9 330

The 1851 shows the following which is the most likely match for the William Woolcock in the later Census records above:-

Guilford, Phillack

Gabriel BLEWETT, head, mar., 55, coal porter, Gwinear
Elizabeth do., wife, mar., 51, Phillack
William do., son, unm., 20, Phillack
Thomas do., son, unm., 17, Phillack
John do., son, 14, Phillack
????? Anne do., daur., 11, Phillack
William WOOLCOCK, lodger, widower, 45, coal porter, Phillack
Henry do., son, unm., 16, Phillack
John do., son, 13, Phillack
Eliza BLEWETT, daur., 28, Phillack

I am reasonably sure now that this will be the family you want in which case we now know that William Woolcock was previously married.

Checking Phillack records and I have found one possible baptism that might be that of son John.

John s/o William and Felice Woolcock of Guilford bp. 4th June 1837 Phillack

'Felice' is not a particularly Cornish name so I think the following marriage might be a likely match:-

William WOOLCOCK married Phillis TREGONING 19th June 1830 at Phillack

I may be able to find more but I don't have the time right now. :(

However I think there should be enough here for you now to work with. ;)

Thank you so much everyone!! This is more than I could have ever hoped for in the way of information. Oh, yes, Carrie was short for Catherine and was my grandfather's sister. Thanks again!
