I am busy working on a family that lived in St Hilary in the 1850's. I have a record of a Mary Jane ROWE who married Richard Carbines OATS in Mar 1880.

Mary Jane ROWE was the daughter of Richard and Mary born Dec 1859. There are a number of children born and christened during the period 1850 - 59 in St Hilary to Richard and Mary (Alexander 1853, Richard 1855, William James 1856,John 1857,). I cannot find a marriage in St Hilary to match but I have a record of Richard ROWE marrying Mary OATS in St Just in Penwith in 1839. An IGI search indicates christenings in the Paul, Madron and St Levan areas. There is one for John Oats ROWE in St Just and John ROWE in St Levan for the same year (1845) which may indicate a home and away christening.

If anyone has researched the ROWE families in this area and can shed any light on this I would be grateful. Just curious but if they link back to Mary OATS I would like to allocate correctly.

Have found some information from Census records. The Cornwall Census on-line project records 1861 for St Hilary seem incomplete. The 1851 Census reveals the OATS family living 2 doors down from the ROWE family in Relubbus lane. The 1871 Census records indicate that Richard and Mary married about 1853 and the children mentioned above are theirs. Again Mary (wife of Richard ROWE) would appear to be Mary SEARLE born 1820.

Mary ROWE 38 wife
Alexander 8 son, scholar, Richd 6 son, Willm J son 5, John son 4, Mary dgr 1.
All born St Hilary.

Relubbus:
John S OATES 43 Wheelwright b. Perran
Mary A. OATES 50 wife b.St Erth,
Mary J. OATES 20 dgr domestic b. St Hilary
Richd C OATES 18 son, Wheelwright b.St Hilary
Amelia OATES 16 dgr, milliner, b.St Hilary
John OATES 4 (FOUR) son, scholar, b.St Hilary

Richard ROWE,
there is also Mary SEARLE listed on same page (only 2 couples in total)

I agree with the findings so far.

And I suggest that the marriage of Richard ROWE and Mary SEARLE in the December Qtr of 1852 will be the correct one.

Unfortunately there is a gap from 1837 to 1860 in my transcripts of St Hilary marriages so I can provide no further information at the moment. :-(

Based on his age in the 1861 Census Richard Rowe should have been born around 1822 or 1823 however there are only two possibiities recorded in IGI.

One of these was baptised 3rd March 1824 at St Hilary - parents Gregory and Catherine.

Looking at the Census and the list of children I have immediately ruled this baptism out.

So I think this one is the one you will want:-

Richard s/o Alexander and Mary Rowe bp. 30th December 1824 St Hilary

And the only Mary Searle who is a likely possibility:-

Mary d/o Thomas and Mary Searle bp. 11th January 1824 St Hilary

I presume you have the details for Richard Carbines Oates but if not his baptism can be found on the OPC site - 1843 Perranuthnoe.

Thanks CT. Yup Richard s/o of Alexander is confirmed by the 1851 Census. Also agree on Mary SEARLE. In the 1871 Census it records Mary SEARLE (snr) living with Richard as his m-in-law which is what put me on to the SEARLE name.
