 Davey/Davies from Paul to Gulval?
« Thread Started on Oct 6, 2009, 10:09am »

Have done some more digging about Gulval and found something that might be ineresting.

William Davies and Mary Gendall's abode is given as Trevarrack early on, before they come to Penzance. Trevarrack is at Gulval, a stone's throw from Chyandour.

Anyway:-

Noticing that we have a William Davies b1870/1 at Gulval (-John1839, -William1799) I decided to look at Trevarrack for any names that might be suggestive of a connection. At Chyandour I find Gendalls and the usual Lowry family who seem to have colonised the Gulval area!

I also found on the 1871 at Trevarrack, 3 Trevarrack Place, Gulval.
Catherine Davies 74 mother of wife Lydia Wilkins born Veryan.

Having a poke around I found that this is most probably

Lydia Viant Davey bapt 1840 to John Davy and Catherine. Other census details seem to contradict her place of birth, but I did find a Catherine Vyant baptised 1797 at Veryan that might fit.

It's interesting how the name Davey- changes to Davies, at Lydia's wedding she is given as Davies.

Going back a bit I could find no marriage for a John Davey and a Catherine. (This is not John Pendar Davy and Catherine Coulson).

What's confusing is that the earlier records give her place of birth as St Mary's, Scilly Isles. Is it possible that someone misheard Veryan for St Mary's or vice-versa. The St Mary's option does not explain the surname Viant either, I can only find a Catherine Vyant/Viant at Veryan.

I can't find a place of birth for John Davy either, there were a lot of Davey's et al, around Moushole- which would come under Paul and on the 1841 the address is noted as Mousehole. Now, what is Catherine doing at Gulval as a widow in 1871, Lydia's husband Thomas Wilkins is born at Gulval.

Could be a mere coincidence but here we have

1. Davey that becomes Davies

2. Paul to Gulval

3. Roughly the same address

4. Possible link to later part of the family i.e. John Davies and Ellen Bramble who have ONE child recorded on 1871 as born at Gulval.

Is it possible that we should perhaps look for a William Davy/Davy?

Any ideas?

Malcolm - when Lydia was married her father's occupation was recorded as 'Coast Guard' so you may be able to find something more there.

I have checked the 1871 Census and noted that Catherine was indeed recorded as born Veryan.

In 1861 Lydia V Davies was a servant at Madron but I am only presuming for the moment that this is the same girl.

1851 is where we find something of more value in determining the identities of these people.

Mousehole, Paul
Wesley Square

John DAVEY, head, mar, 60, shipwright, St Mawes
Catherine do., wife, mar, 57, Buryan
Elizabeth do., daur, unm, 25, St Mawes
Ann do., daur, unm, 15, St Mawes
Amelia do., daur, 12, scholar, Mousehole
Lydia do., daur, 11, scholar, Mousehole
Rosena do., grandaughter, 11 months, Penzance

Note that Catherine is now born about 1793/4 and her birthplace is BURYAN.

This could be a misrepresentation of VERYAN as both would sound quite similar.

Hmmm - I think there might be a suggestion of a second marriage involved here!

From the OPC site:-

John DAVEY, mariner of Manaccan married Catherine VYAN of Manaccan by Banns 13th July 1831 at Manaccan with consent of parents

I don't know where this might lead you but it seems certainly away from Paul! ;)
Witnesses:- John James, Mary Ann James

Hi there,

I'm just looking at the possibilities from address information, bit difficult when most of them rented!!!!

What's frustrating, and bewildering too, is that on some records birthplaces seem to vary such a great deal. None of the parishes above, St Mary's, Veryan, Buryan, Manaccan and St Mawed could be described as being near enough the same, like Mousehole/Paul or even Newlyn for that matter.

More headscratching....1
