Hello Treehopper,
Any connection in your JOHNS line to Joseph Johns (baptised Paul 18 Oct 1785; buried Paul 21 Jan 1842) who married Elizabeth James Rouffignac at Paul on 2 Jan 1820? They had seven children all baptised at Paul: Francis Rouffignac Johns (30 Nov 1821); Joseph Johns (27 July 1823); Margaret Rouffignac Johns (9 Oct 1825); Elizabeth Johns (13 June 1828); Catherine Johns (4 July 1832); William Johns (27 Jan 1835); John Rouffignac Johns (8 Mar 1840). This Johns family of Newlyn were a fishing and sea going family.
I am descended through Catherine Johns (baptised 3 July 1832) who married her second cousin John Batten of Newlyn at Paul on 13 June 1857.
Regards,
Mary

Hi Mary. Many thanks for your input but none of those names spring to mind - I am sure they are of a line of descent that is different to mine. However, it was nice to hear from you.

Shw'mae,
Thanks for getting back, Treehopper. If it helps in anyway, I can go back on my own JOHNS line a little bit further:
Parents of Joseph Johns (1795-1842) were Joseph Johns (ca 1766-1848) and Catherine Mann who were married at Paul on 21 Dec 1793. They had one other son - James Mann Johns (baptised Paul 3 March 1811) who married Mary Achim Smith at Paul on 1 June 1834. Their offspring were all baptised at Paul and were: Joshua Smith Johns (12 Apr 1835); Mary Ann Johns (8 July 1836); Patience Johns (14 Oct 1838); James John Johns (1 Jan 1843); Joseph Johns (6 Jan 1850); Elizabeth Curnow Johns (15 Dec 1853); William James Johns (19 Oct 1856).
Joshua Smith Johns (1835-1894) who married Mary Jane Pollard at Paul on 24 Dec 1856 had four sons called Joshua Smith Johns (baptised at St. Peter's, Newlyn on 14 April 1861); James Mann Johns (baptised and buried at St. Peter's in November 1864); William John Johns (born 1875 at Newlyn) and Joseph Johns (born 1876 at Newlyn).
The above are probably still not connected to your own line, but hope it may be of help.
Diolch,
Mary

Hello,Mary:
ROUFFIGNAC.
An interesting but probably useless piece of info.: William R.1729-1791, wife Elizabeth. Pic available. His daughter Elizabeth 1775,Paul.Cornwall, married a Batten. 3 children.
My source is a researcher in the States by the name of Richards. There are a number of ROUFFIGNACs in his Tree. I could put you in touch with him....

Hello David,
Many thanks for replying. Your information is far from useless. William de Rouffignac (1729-1791) and his wife Elizabeth (nee Miscally) were my 5xgreat-grandparents. Luckily, I do have a photo of a portrait of William done in his days as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy. Through my mother I am descended through two of his children - Francis (1763-1832) who married Margaret James and also through his daughter Elizabeth (1776-1857), who you mention, and who married Philip Batten. Francis had a daughter Elizabeth James Rouffignac whose daughter Catherine Johns married her second cousin John Batten, grandson of Philip Batten and his wife Elizabeth Batten nee Rouffignac. Through my maternal grandmother (who used to speak of her grandparents being second cousins and both descended from the Rouffignac family), I have always known of my line of descent. But it was only when several years ago I got in touch with a researcher myself that I found out all the family history going back to 17th century France.
William's paternal grandfather Jacob de Rouffignac (born at La Rochefoucauld near Angouleme, France in 1640) was a Huguenot Pasteur at Puycasquier near Mauvezin, France (now in the Departement of Gers in the Midi-Pyrenees) who had to flee to London with his family following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and the persecution of the Huguenots. William's father Dr. Guy de Rouffignac was a JP and physician in Croydon, Surrey before becoming a Lecturer or Reader in Anatomy at Surgeons' Hall, London. There is much written on this family in books and documents held by the Huguenot Society, and I have been able to get copies of extracts from books, as well as copies of documents and wills. I also have a copy of Jacob de Rouffignac's coat of arms.
William de Roufignac's mother was Alice Kerrill, daughter of Thomas Kerrill of Hadlow, Kent. Alice's sister, Elizabeth Kerrill, married Jeffery Amherst of Riverhead, Sevenoaks, Kent, a Bencher at Grays Inn, who was one of William's godfathers. Elizabeth and Jeffery's son was Field Marshal Sir Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst of Holmesdale, who was Commander in Chief of the British Forces, Crown Governor of Virginia and Governor General of British North America. The family names Kerrill and Amherst feature regularly amongst the Newlyn descendants of William de Rouffignac.
I have more details on my genealogy pages:

Once again, many thanks for your input,
Regards,
Mary
